Ronald Lightbown: Botticelli - Life and Work (Abbeville Press, 1989)

The author never tells us the stories behind some of the most important paintings such as Nostagio degli Onesti or The Miracles of San Zenobio. Instead, he wastes ink on informing us that the Virgin wore blue or that Augustine had light in his eyes. That's what illustrations are for, idiot.
